Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas (Brown II) decision prohibits segregation in public education.

May 17, 1954

Supreme Court, in a unanimous decision, finds, “separate educational facilities are inherently unequal” and declares, “delays in desegregating school systems are no longer tolerable.” The case was brought by Oliver Brown, on behalf of his daughter Linda, a third-grader, who was assigned to a school an hour away from her home, instead of to the school a few blocks away. The court expands on this decision with another in 1955.*
